Grimsbury Beavers Build Homes - 03-06-2010
Beavers from 1st
Grimsbury Scout Group, based in East Close, Banbury have raised £1350 for
Habitat for Humanity UK
This is sufficient to fund the construction of an entire house for a 3rd world
family in need of a decent place to live
Beaver Scouts [aged 6 to 8 years old] presented a giant cheque to Ian Walkden,
National Director, for Habitat for Humanity UK at their Scout Hut in Banbury
last Wednesday
Funds were raised through a very successful community coffee morning, organised and run by Beaver Scout Leaders, a Cub Scout 'Scrap Heap Challenge' - building shelters from cardboard boxes and recycling waste, and individual collection boxes taken home by Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
Steve Coombs, Assistant Cub Scout Leader, went to Cambodia as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in February 2010.
During his stay he helped to build two homes in a week and handed them over to local families who were being re-located from squalid shacks on a Phnom Penh rubbish tip.
With the help of Habitat for Humanity staff in Banbury, Beavers, Cubs & Scouts learned about Cambodian children who live and work on this rubbish tip and their need for a decent place to live. Supported by their adult leaders, the young people worked together to raise sufficient funds to construct a whole house.
