International Scouting

Taking Young People Abroad

Travelling abroad is an exciting part of international Scouting, providing an opportunity to learn about another country and culture, to meet new people and experience new things.

Thinking of going abroad but unsure of exactly what is involved in organising a trip? The information in the factsheet Thinking of Going Away provides an outline of the areas you will need to consider. It will help you to research your ideas and start your planning.

A list of international Scout camps, events and expeditions happening all over the world which you could consider taking a group of young people to can be found on the Scouts website here.

The next step is to request the Visits Abroad pack from the Assistant County Commissioner (International) This pack contains all the information and forms needed to plan a visit abroad. You should let us know as soon as you start your planning and remember that your final trip paperwork needs to have been signed off at least 3 months (Europe) or 6 months (outside Europe) before you go.

You can contact the Assistant County Commissioner (International) to request the Visits Abroad pack or for more information.

JOTA/JOTI

What is JOTI?

JOTI (Jamboree On The Internet) is part of JOTA-JOTI, an annual international jamboree taking place around the world simultaneously. It is organised by WOSM, the World Organization of the Scout Movement. Scouts from all over the world communicate over the Air (amateur radio) JOTA and the Internet JOTI using any technology locally available. There are loads of different ways to communicate, including text-based chat, voice chat, video chat, emails, blogs, and social media networks.

JOTA-JOTI allows you to build friendships around the world and to find out more about their culture and scouting life. Our connection with Bosnian Scouts started through JOTI

The Scouts is part of a worldwide movement – there are Scout Associations in 216 countries and territories, and we are all member of the World Organisation of Scout Movements (WOSM).

International Scouting is a very broad term and can involve everything from going on an expedition to another country to learning about cultures and traditions in your weekly programme.

Oxfordshire Scouts, Districts and Groups have all offered trips abroad in the past and have travelled to almost every country in Europe.  You can also take part in International camps and events in the UK on the Scouts website here.

A list of current Oxfordshire international events can be found here.

In addition, during the third weekend of October is JOTA-JOTI which is annual opportunity to make contact with Scouts around the world through the Internet and Airwaves.
