Getting started

Initial training for everyone

Once you have completed the appointment process and your role becomes provisional you have five months to complete the Getting Started training.

Getting Started is made up of six modules which must be completed before the adult can be fully appointed. There is a seventh module for Executive Committee members / trustees.

Getting Started needs to be completed within five months of the role start date, as recorded on Compass. These modules are:

Personal learning plan (02)

This module consists of creating a plan to meet the training requirements of your role, taking into account existing knowledge and skills. This must be completed within five months of gaining the provisional appointment and reviewed at least every six months up until completion of the Wood Badge.

You should discuss and agree your Personal Learning Plan with your Training Adviser. The discussion should involve:

  • Agreeing which modules you need to complete
  • Identifying whether you need to do any learning to be able to complete each module; if you do, agree which method you will use
  • Identifying whether you have any prior learning that you can apply to your Scouting role
  • Determining whether you wish to work towards the external award option
  • Identifying the validation methods for the first modules
  • Agreeing a timescale for all the above

In a single meeting you should not aim to agree a learning method, validation and timescale for every module. You should try to prioritise the modules and create a plan for those that you are going to work on in the next six to twelve months. It may be that at the first meeting you just agree the learning and validation methods for the Getting Started modules, which need to be completed within the first five months.

The Adult’s Personal File contains a workbook which you can use either by yourselves or alongside your Training Adviser to assist with the process of putting together their Personal Learning Plan.
